Several people at RPS have managed to secure a Steam Deck since Valve’s handheld started shipping about five months ago. If you’re not so lucky, good news: Valve says it’s ramping up production and everyone who has already pre-ordered one should receive their Steam Deck before the end of the year.
“We are excited to announce that we will be able to meet demand sooner than we had estimated for everyone in the reservation queue,” the post on the Steam website begins.. “Many of the supply chain shortfalls that affect the Steam Deck are gradually being addressed and we continue to increase production so that we can produce more Decks faster than ever before.”
“Starting today, we’ve updated the pre-order windows and everyone currently in the pre-order queue will receive their Steam Deck email this year,” the post continues. “Many customers who were in the ‘Q4 or later’ window have moved to the ‘Q3 (July-September)’ window. And all the others are now solidly in the ‘Q4 (October-December)’ window.”
If you don’t already have a reserve, buying one now will put you in your Q4 bucket, which means you should still get your Steam Deck in 2022.
The way Steam Deck Fulfillment works is you spend a few dollars or pounds to buy a reservation and you get a shipping window. Once Valve has a Steam Deck in hand to ship to you, you will receive an email and Steam notifications asking you to pay the remaining price. You have a time limit to do this within a week or two, I forget – and if you pay the price, it will ship to you quickly.
We really like the Steam Deck, for reasons that James explained better in his Steam Deck review. “I normally hate that word, but the experience of using a Steam Deck is satisfying, exciting, and largely unique: it’s playing a blockbuster action adventure on the way to town and digging a Humble Bundle on the way back. ; it’s closing turn off your PC after reaching a save point, then take it to the same cloud and save it later in bed; it’s a new and comfortable way to play the games you already have, with enough performance and openness in the PC style to avoid it feeling like a gimmick.” It’s nice that more people will start playing with him sooner.
