What if we created the school of our dreams? Choose entertaining teachers rather than tyrants, classes outside rather than within four walls, to study magic rather than geography … All this is possible in Two Point Campus, a management game online with and the world of Two Point Hospital. Back to school is August 8 on Game Pass and all consoles, but is it a good idea to launch a game in college?
This test was performed on a PC.
It is a pleasure to rediscover the world of Two Point! We insist on this point from the beginning, Two Point Campus is not “Two Point Hospital but school”. The engine is the same, the radio hosts are the same, the game takes place in the same universe … But everything is new, from the animations to the gags of these famous hosts (subtitled finally! almost!) obviously passing through the gameplay. Everything is new, but this connected universe taking shape between Two Point games puts us in comfortable slippers. It is the return ofa colorful and joyful world, where all misfortunes are visual jokes, with spell lessons gone wrong and seeing students sporting pumpkin heads, For instance. The objects you place are pretexts for exaggerated interactions that make just exploring your campus enjoyable. There is so much to do that you almost forget to build. The good news is that the gameplay has adapted to your wishes, but we’ll be back. Yeah, what’s the goal?
Rich in content that knows how to renew itself
Twelve scenarios are proposed to youeach one takes you to a different universe with its formations. There are 17 formations in total, and once unlocked, you can use them on the following maps. Let’s not spoil the surprise with some examples from the beginning of the game: cooking classes, cavalry or robotics. One level even offers you to administer a very convincing replica of Hogwarts. You have an idea of the possibilities and the scenarios are renewed by differentiating their gameplay, each offering unique challenges. With sometimes a balance not really developed but that will need to be corrected very quickly. Starting a campus from scratch may initially provoke a sigh of laziness, but discovering the evolutions of the gameplay and the subtleties of each level renews interest in the game.
Let’s add that a full and customizable sandbox mode is included, if constraints aren’t your thing.
Each scenario presents different objectives to be completed to get the three stars and unlock new elements, and this proposing different challenges, but the success system keeps the same structure. If your students are happy, they study better and get good grades; if their academic results are good, you have substantial financial bonuses. Obviously you will need to keep a good balance between your basic income, i.e. the tuition fees or the rent paid by your students, and the salaries of your pedagogues or janitors. But most of all, a significant bonus is paid each month based on the XP earned by your students.
Seems a bit like an RPG, students have a level in the training they have chosen and earn XP as soon as they take a class or do their homework. But all the characters also have a Sims side. They have need bars that must be met to keep them happy during their 3 year course. This is crucial if you want them to pay college tuition. And if it goes very badly, their average will go down, and you may find yourself micro-manager trainees that you will need to offer mentoring.
The professors and the rest of the staff are not excluded, and all these beautiful people are distinguished by particular traits, some humorous and some involving real gameplay elements. Someone who has naturally deplorable hygiene will be reluctant to wash and complain about being dirty … They too will have to train or be in a good mood to be more efficient. And since they’re your biggest expense, you’ll need to be careful who you recruit!
The brilliant idea of the two-stage game
We said that a management game generally leaves little time available since you have to constantly solve problems and build quickly. Two Point Campus decides to solve this problem. The game takes place in two main phases, so the school year phase is all about running your campus smoothly. A timetable that concerns students and teachers is established from the beginning by automatically occupying the available classrooms. It is not possible to do the program alone, beyond the creation of special events such as student parties. But, anyway, do we want to inflict this headache on ourselves? And when they don’t have class, your students will take care of themselves or do their homework, often asking for new materials to do them, such as a well-equipped library.
It’s not just academic achievements you’ll be checking – student relationships, club building, teacher training, rival gang attacks or natural disasters punctuate campus life, as well as incessant demands from students or inspectors. However, this phase remains less active than that of the long holidays., since everything should work. After the joy of discovering the animations of a new class, the tendency is to press the “fast forward” button as time progresses, which would also benefit from being faster. Nothing prevents you from undertaking large constructions during the school year, but it is always dangerous to touch everything while the students are in the classroom, it is a hard blow to break their routine.
The second phase, rather original in the world of management games, is the phase of the long summer holidays, a kind of active break that gives you time to plan next year. You have to choose among the many courses that your campus can offer or improve those you already offer, and build the necessary classrooms, taking into account the ever-increasing number of students. More students means more facilities to accommodate them, so your campus will grow year on year. The game then offers you this moment of respite, expandable indefinitely, before pressing the “start the school year” button. You don’t waste money apart from what you spend on construction, your students and teachers automatically meet their needs … In short, it’s a pleasant and stress-free planning time.. You can try a layout, abandon it, improve it, change your mind about a formation … Nothing will collapse during this time, so if you want to optimize the installation of the Annex B toilets for long minutes, enjoy! And it lets you take full advantage of the game’s aesthetic customization tools.
The strength of the building system
The game offers you a lot of various objects to place. They add charm to your campus, provide entertainment for your students, or simply help create a place that will please your eyes. And the possibilities are wide. What time you have control of the entire proposed space, internal and external, in complete freedom. You can choose to have a large building housing all of your rooms, or multiple outbuildings, each with its own specialty. However, some classrooms have to be built outdoors. This results in a management game that does not pay in the “puzzle game in disguise”, with pre-designed buildings that do not suit what you want to do, which force you to turn the elements in all directions to find the right combination. Space is certainly not infinite, but as long as you have the money to buy new land, you will have plenty of room to build whatever you have in mind.
The construction itself even has the luxury of being pleasant. Avoid redundancy if you plan to use the many tools at your disposal. Filters, system of favorites, possibility to duplicate rooms or save projects from one scenario to another … There is no frustration in wearing construction clothes. On the other hand, we regret the difficulty of finding certain information in the management interfaces. We feel the desire to make beautiful displays, very “PowerPoint presentations”, but we lose clarity. For example, you weren’t able to find a page that summarizes all authorized and banned assignments for your staff, even though Two Point Hospital offered it. If you want to manage on a large scale who among the pedagogues is authorized to do tutoring, either the function is no longer there or yours has not really found it. And it is not for lack of gaze … Well, it is a somewhat negative final judgment not to let the game rest on its laurels in the coming quarters, because the ratio remains excellent!
- The phase of long holidays, a brilliant system
- Repeated scenarios
- The many and various training courses
- The cute, sparkling and fun universe
- The very complete construction tools
- Personalization and external use
- Micro-management, well balanced
- The phase of the school year, sometimes a bit long with nothing to do
- The interfaces are almost like that, but they aren’t perfect yet
Two Point Campus makes an almost perfect copy of it by renewing the management game genre. Its fantastic two-stage game system allows you to combine the best of both worlds: a game in which you can build stress-free and with ease, and a game in which you can watch with pleasure the result of your work. If the phase of the school year proves more fervent than the summer holidays, it allows you to appreciate the excellent work on the atmosphere, the animations and the personalization of your campus. The game is fun and does not fall within the classic repetition of the genre, thanks to its powerful construction tools and its scenarios that know how to renew themselves in terms of decor and gameplay. An example to follow!
