Auckland Malaysian restaurant hailed as one of the best in the world

Auckland restaurant Sri Pinang was named on a global food map as one of the best restaurants in the world.

Condé Nast Traveler magazine published a map with 210 of the world’s best restaurants that are “worth traveling”.

Sri Pinang, on Karangahape Rd, is one of only nine named in Oceania and the only named restaurant in New Zealand.

Owners Angie Siew and Kun Kaw told 1News they were both surprised and very excited to hear the news.

“One of my friends emailed me and said Angie, check it out, you’re on the news. I thought it was a joke.”

“I’m so glad they put us on the world map,” said Siew.

Kaw, who is also the chef, said he couldn’t believe it when he found out why his restaurant is “so old”, having opened in 1991.

Thai chef and restaurant owner Pim Techamuanvivit wrote the synopsis for Condé Nast Traveler, saying Sri Pinang’s food is delicious.

“Food is simple, homemade and more – think sambal shrimp (in the shells), roti curry, beef rendang, char kuey tiew and beans fried in black olives.”

Asked about his infamous roti, Kaw said the secret to its deliciousness is that it’s made fresh by him on site every day. He says good roti has butter and is fresh and fluffy.

Siew says the most popular dish people order in Sri Pinang is beef rendang.

“Beefrendang is made from fresh ingredients, it takes a while to cook, there is a lot of effort to put in, it is time consuming and you can’t rush to cook the rendang, it has to be cooked slowly.”

Sri Pinang regular Andy Higgs told 1News that his order is vegetarian curry with roti.

“Their roti is exceptional.”

Higgs said he’s not “absolutely” surprised that the restaurant was named on the world food map.

“Pre-Covid, you would be lucky to get in here, but we feel very lucky to be able to come here every week, but don’t let the secret get out,” Higgs joked.

Another regular restaurant, Chas Gunaratne, says he eats there at least twice a week and always orders the nasi goreng.

He says all the food, especially the roti, is “excellent”.

Among the restaurants cited on the Condé Nast Traveler food map were Malay Chinese in Sydney, Nok by Alara in Nigeria, Lardo in Mexico and Wo Hop in New York.
